Johann Johannsson (Score)

Jóhann Jóhannsson was a composer from Iceland who had a background in a variety of different genres of music and built an impressive series of works to his name, receiving widespread critical acclaim for his work across his solo albums, feature films and various other media.

His solo recordings include, ‘Englabörn’ (2002), written for string quartet and electronics & ‘Virðulegu Forsetar’ (2004), for brass, percussion, organ and piano (both released on the respected British label Touch); 2006’s ‘ IBM 1401, a User´s Manual’, and 2008’s ‘Fordlandia’ both released on 4AD to great critical acclaim and written for string orchestra and electronics; 2016 saw the release of Jóhann’s final solo album, ‘Orphée’, on Deutsche Grammophon.

Jóhannsson’s many side-projects included the analog synth based rock group Apparat Organ Quartet and the electronic music collective Evil Madness. He also collaborated with many internationally renowned artists.

His music has been featured in several films, including Wicker Park (2004), Ashes and Snow (2006), Opium, Diary of a Madwoman (2007) and Voleurs De Cheveaux (2007).

As well as his feature film scores, Jóhannsson wrote for many documentaries, short films, theatre productions, instillations and several contemporary dance works.
