Mira Calix was the working alias of Chantal Passamonte, a British based DJ, composer and artist. Born and raised in South Africa , moving to London in 1991 and eventually signing to Warp Records in 1996, Chantal was one of the most well renowned exponents of modern electro-acoustic compositions. She made starkly personal, sculpted, nearly ambient soundscapes, mixing intimate vocals with experimental electronic and organic textures.
As well as several releases on Warp, Mira Calix produced compositions, soundtracks, commissioned works and installations for a variety of institutions including the National Theatre, The BFI, The London Sinfonietta and The Royal Shakespeare Company, merging electronics with more conventional and classical instrumentation with breathtaking results.
In 2010 Mira Calix won an auspicious BASCA (The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors)- British Composer Award for the experimental contemporary classical piece ‘My Secret Heart’ which was described as ‘transformational’ by the awarding panel.
As a live performer and DJ, Mira Calix supported and toured with a broad range of acts, including Radiohead, Aphex Twin and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
