Staran Wake is the collaborative project of Andrew Bunsell and Tom Releen.

Bunsell and Relleen started working together in 2015. After much sonic exploration involving countless hazy late night recording sessions at each other’s studios and crisper afternoons producing the results, the duo’s musical vision materialised with this self-titled instrumental album, taking nearly 4 years to complete.

Their self-titled multi-instrumental album is composed with a wide range of instruments and combines multiple dark, experimental genres to form a rather lavish and unique proposition. It is imprinted with intense turgid textures, interweaving the hyper-tactile characteristics of analogue sound with field recording elements and sound effects.

Billed as “Britain’s finest experimentalists”, the music explores the intimate feelings of transient space and otherness. It uses subtle build-ups of tension and repetitive progressions to shape an impression of distended time and space. More than a mere treat for the ears, it’s a multi-layered album that invites reflection.

Andrew Bunsell is a Franco-British producer, sound designer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He has performed extensively across the UK, Europe and South America, including at the Barbican, Tate Modern and MALBA Museo. He works with orchestral composition, dark experimental pop and electronic music, also scoring for film and theatre. Andrew’s work draws upon his interest in quantum foam and molecular communication, exploring dissociation, disintegration and collapse.

Tom Relleen was a British producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He co-wrote a vast number of releases, including for Tomaga, Autotelia and Papivores. He was also a touring member of The Oscillation. His incessant curiosity, integrity, energy and unswerving dedication to the scene was admired by many artists and music enthusiasts alike all around the world. His relentless sonic explorations keep on bringing more creative amazement after his untimely passing in 2020.
