Anita Lane
Anita Lane (1960 – 2021) was an Australian singer, songwriter and recording artist from Melbourne whose work is closely associated with the formative years of The Birthday Party and the early development of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, where she contributed to and co-wrote several notable compositions. Her solo output is characterised by a distinctive blend of lyrical abstraction, dark pop sensibility and stylistic fluidity, beginning with the EP Dirty Sings and continuing with the album Dirty Pearl, which combined original material, reinterpretations and collaborative work. Across her career she collaborated with a wide range of artists including Mick Harvey, Barry Adamson, Die Haut and Einstürzende Neubauten, reflecting her position within a broader network of experimental and post-punk musicians. Her later solo work, including Sex O’Clock, further developed a genre-defying approach that draws on elements of avant-garde composition, baroque textures and electronic influences, establishing a singular voice within alternative music.
