Cabaret Voltaire

Cabaret Voltaire are an English electronic and experimental music group formed in Sheffield by Richard H. Kirk, Stephen Mallinder, and Chris Watson. Emerging from early tape-based sound experiments, their work developed through the manipulation of recorded material, reel-to-reel techniques, and processed voice and instrumentation, drawing influence from Dadaist ideas and the broader avant-garde. After Watson’s departure, Kirk and Mallinder continued to evolve the project, expanding its relationship with electronic music and club-oriented forms. Widely recognised as pioneers of industrial and experimental electronic music, Cabaret Voltaire helped establish approaches to sound and composition that influenced the development of post-punk, electronic, and underground music cultures.
