Frank Tovey
Frank Tovey (1956 – 2022) best known for his work under the alias Fad Gadget, is widely regarded as a key influence on a generation of electronic musicians and a significant cult figure of the post-punk era. As the first artist signed by Daniel Miller to Mute in the late 1970s, Fad Gadget emerged alongside early innovators such as The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, and Throbbing Gristle, helping to shape the foundations of electronic music as it moved from the margins toward wider recognition. In the mid-1980s, Tovey stepped away from the Fad Gadget name to pursue a more traditional singer-songwriter path, releasing several albums, including collaborations with Irish cowpunk bluegrass group The Pyros, and composing for theatre productions directed by Michael Vale. He later revisited the Fad Gadget project for live performances, including touring with Depeche Mode in Europe, before his death in London in the early 2000s.
