Divide and Dissolve is an instrumental doom metal band from Melbourne, Australia. The band was founded by saxophonist and guitarist Takiaya Reed, who is of Tsalagi and African-American heritage.
Their music blends elements of doom metal, drone, and experimental noise, creating a soundscape that is both heavy and deeply meditative. The band’s mission is rooted in social and political activism, using their music as a powerful tool to decolonize spaces and challenge systems of oppression. Their compositions are as much about creating visceral sonic experiences as they are about amplifying conversations around Indigenous sovereignty and environmental justice.
Since their formation, Divide and Dissolve have released critically acclaimed albums such as ‘Abomination’ (2018), ‘Gas Lit’ (2021) & ‘Systemic” (2023) the latter two produced by Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Nielson. These works, marked by intense instrumentation and occasional spoken-word interludes, have earned Divide and Dissolve recognition for their ability to convey immense emotional depth and resistance, with politically charged song titles and a stated mission for their music to be “decolonising, decentralising, disestablishing, and destroying white supremacy,” as they continue to advocate for dismantling colonial structures and inspiring reflection and change.
